Individual Workshop Descriptions:
June 8 at 1 pm— Workshop 1: The Art of the Tea Bowl
The tea bowl is more than a vessel — it is the spiritual centerpiece of the way of tea (the tea ceremony). In this session, you’ll experience bowls shaped by time, hand, and fire, and learn how their weight, texture, and imperfections express the wabi-sabi aesthetic. We'll explore the quiet presence of Kifumi Kawamura’s work and how much the tea bowl itself affects the act of drinking matcha.
July 13 at 1 pm: Workshop 2: An Essential Tool for Tea – The Tea Whisk
The chasen, or bamboo whisk, is essential for preparing a proper bowl of matcha. In this workshop, you'll use a whisk handcrafted by master artisan Tango Tanimura, whose family has been crafting tea whisks for 20 generations, all created from a single piece of bamboo. You'll also learn about the artistry behind the chasen and how to care for it to ensure it remains in excellent condition for years to come.
August 3 at 1 pm: Workshop 3: The Charm of Urushi
Urushi (Japanese lacquer) brings timeless elegance and quiet strength to daily life. Once so revered, it was called “Japan.” This art & craft continues to enrich both art and everyday objects. In this session, you’ll explore its history, care, and unique beauty. Urushi is also used in Kintsugi, the art of mending broken ceramics with gold—a brief introduction will be included.
August 10 at 1 pm: Workshop 4: The Way of Tea and Zen
The final workshop returns to the essence of chanoyu: stillness, awareness, and gratitude. We’ll explore the Zen philosophy that underpins the way of tea (known as the tea ceremony) through silence, seasonal sweets, and tea shared in the presence. This is a gentle and soulful conclusion to the summer series, inviting you to carry the spirit of tea into your everyday life.
