“New” BUDDHA STATUE - Ki-Chu New York starts to sell Buddha states by Hakkodo -

Kamakura-bori was originated by Buddhist sculptors around 800 years ago when Zen Buddhism was first introduced to Japan from China. The Goto family, which runs Hakkodo are descendants of Buddhist sculptors. However, they lost their jobs as Buddhist sculptors because the Meiji government implemented the policy, “shinbutsu bunrei” which refers to the separation of Shinto and Buddhism, and this policy triggered the movement “haibutukisyaku” to abolish Buddhism. The Goto family focused on developing Kamakura-bori continuing their dignity and tradition until today. In 2020, Hakkodo begins again to create Buddha statues for the first time in about 100 years.
